Thanks for an interesting video! Snälltåget came about by buying 40+ years old German coaches. Which seems quite obvious from watching your video. The coaches in themselves seem to be of the same quality as when I travelled around on a euro train card in 1974. The SJ (the Swedish state-owned rail company) also runs trains between Stockholm and Berlin. That would have made for an interesting comparison.

Oh, and if one can afford it, definitely a private compartment, but ideally not like the one here which is basically a 6 person compartment that has seats during the day and couchettes at night, only all to yourself. Rather, one with at least a wash basin and hopefully an en suite bathroom with toilet and shower, meaning a real sleeping compartment. I mean if you're going to splurge and spend close to $500, you should get all that for it. In this situation I probably would have gone for a regular couchette because that IS a lot of money to spend just to have a couchette compartment for yourself--all the more so given that they attendant didn't even make up the bed. But I have no idea what deluxe compartments cost on overnight trips in Europe these days. They're a small fortune here in the US and no way could I afford one these days.

As a Swede, having to reserve a table in the restaurant car is a huge culture shock to me. Never heard about that practice before, and it's definitely not the norm... I know that some SJ-trains in Sweden require you to book meals in advance if you want to be served a warm meal by your seat in first class (on trainrides up to about 3 hours travel time), but never having to pre-book seats in restaurant cars on longer routes.

Hey Chloe! This was a fun, and informative, but also puzzling vid. So nice to see an old-school train car still doing good service (though, another commenter, 57thorns, did an excellent assessment of your not a/c probs to which I would only add that a multi-lingual sticker (saying, "no A/C, only heat -- open the flerkin' window!) would have been helpful?) And the whole dining car thing IS ON THEM! They did NOT seem to include this MOST important page 1, but was on a later page? Not your fault. And I thought it was telling that you had to take a nap halfway through deploying your bunk!😂 The reason bunks are deployed by stewards in North America and elsewhere is that if you accidentally crush a finger, or fall out of an improperly set-up bunk -- it, esprin the US, would lead to mucho dinero in injury compensation. Apparently, the Scando-Germanics are employing a "Midsommar" style of self-survival?🤔 Still loved the trip and the vid, and Ludwig would have been sardined in one of those bunks!💕

I love overnight trains, so long as, of course, I have a lie flat sleep situation. The only two downsides to it are that it can be hard to fall and stay asleep and get a good night's sleep, and you miss all the scenery you pass through at night, assuming that there is any as some routes are pretty ordinary. Otherwise, there's nothing quite like an overnight train--especially if you have your own compartment, even better if it has an en suite!

4:19 Nope, that's perfectly normal. 20:21 Yeah, the Germanic world doesn't really do that kind of things much. All the protestant Germanic nations have high wages and a ethos of equality and self reliance. Anglophone countries have cheaper staffs, worse labour laws, more focus on service, less distain for both providing too much service and requesting too much, etc... 25:20 So coffee beans don't grow in Europe. We import them, usually from south America. But yes, it's probably a local brand, but it's not local coffee as such.

Fantastic video but that train ride is a big no for me. Way too expensive for what you get.

You're not meant to book a couchette for six people alone. That will make it very pricey indeed.
